Generative Engine Optimization: how enterprises become the answer AI cites

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring your content and entity graph so that AI engines, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, cite you as the authoritative answer. It is distinct from SEO, and at the enterprise tier it is still uncontested.

Generative Engine Optimization: how enterprises become the answer AI cites

Your next enterprise buyer will not start at a list of ten blue links. They will ask an AI engine a question and read the synthesized answer. If your firm is not in the sources that answer is built from, you are invisible at the exact moment the decision is being framed.

GEO answers one question: when a buyer asks an AI engine about your category, is your enterprise the source it cites?

GEO is not SEO with a new name

Classic SEO optimizes for ranking a page in a list. GEO optimizes for being retrieved, trusted, and quoted inside a generated answer. The mechanics overlap, clean HTML, fast pages, authority, but the target is different. An AI engine does not rank you; it decides whether to lift a sentence from you and attribute it.

  • Answer-first structure: lead every page with the directly citable answer, then support it. Engines reward the passage they can quote verbatim.
  • Entity completeness: a Schema.org graph connecting your organization, people, services and proprietary research so engines resolve you as an entity, not a string.
  • Machine-readable surfaces: structured data, a maintained llms.txt, and crawlable, un-gated content engines can actually parse.
  • Demonstrable authority: original research, named expertise and consistent claims across the web so the model trusts the source.

Why the enterprise tier is still open

Most large organizations have content estates built for a search era, deep expertise trapped in PDFs and unstructured pages that engines cannot parse into an answer. The firms that restructure first capture the citations, and citations compound: being quoted makes you more likely to be quoted again.

How to measure it

You cannot improve what you cannot see. Stand up monitoring across the major engines and track share-of-voice for your category questions, which sources are cited instead of you, and the gap between your classic ranking and your AI citation rate. That gap is the opportunity.

The site you are reading is the proof: answer-first pages, full Schema.org coverage, an llms.txt, and explicit allow-listing of AI crawlers.
